Description
The RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship (ENS) course provides a clear introduction to the basics of navigation, seamanship, and safety at sea.
It is ideal for beginners with little or no boating experience, who want to better understand how boats are navigated and operated, whether operating under power or sail. This course compliments the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course
By the end of the course, students will understand:
- Basic nautical terminology and seamanship principles
- How to read and use nautical charts
- Plotting positions and understanding buoys, marks, and symbols
- The basics of tides and tidal streams
- Understanding positions, bearings, and courses
- Collision avoidance and Rules of the Road
- Recognising navigation lights and buoyage systems
- Safe watchkeeping and lookout responsibilities
- Basic meteorology and how weather affects boating
- Practical seamanship knowledge to support safe decision‑making at sea
